Weekly Challenge #5 - Complete

Welcome back to Paint Warriors!
This week’s challenge is complete, and I’m going to be the first to admit that I think I could have done better on this one. For this round, I chose to paint a Ash Wastes Nomand—I had a great time painting one of these guys before with the Thunderhawk Blue, but I'll explain where I think things could have gone a bit better and why experimenting like this is important.

The color palette for the challenge consisted of the following five paints:

  1. ⚫ Abaddon Black (Base)

  2. 🔵 Thunderhawk Blue (Layer)

  3. 🔴 Evil Suns Scarlet (Layer)

  4. 🟡 Yriel Yellow (Layer)

  5. 🟢 Orruk Flesh (Base)

1. I started this with an all-over basecoat of Abaddon Black. As I've learned from previous challenges, you can start building layers on top of rich, dark colors to develop some really nice shadows on the model.

2. Thunderhawk Blue was up next and was very easy to apply as a dry brush all over the model. The process left the black in the recesses and underside, giving me the primary look I was trying to achieve.

3. I decided to hit the straps and ropes with Evil Sunz Scarlet to break up the model. I only really had to be super careful in a couple of places, but this is where I started to get crunched on time and couldn't clean up as much as I wanted to or develop the shading as I would have liked to.

4. Time was becoming a bit of a factor, and I had to color match the Yriel Yellow with another paint from my collection, Flash Gitz Yellow. I hit the eyes, ear pieces, and a few other details, but then I tried to do a hazard stripe on the canister when I was already worried about time.

5. So the reason why I keep bringing up time is that I like to have this article up on Fridays. Obviously, today being a Tuesday, I fell behind, but it was a busy week, and life comes first. I get to the Orruk Flesh step, and I'm ready to be done. I hit the gloves, face, pants, edges of the tarps, and the canister before applying a really watered-down layer of Abaddon Black to the face and wiping some away with a dry brush.

But that will do it for this week...I mean last week's challenge. I'll be back with this weeks challenge in just a bit.
