Paint Warriors - Weekly Challenge #2 - Completed
Welcome back to Paint Warriors — the weekly challenge where I roll the dice on a random 5-color palette and see where creativity takes us.
The rules are simple:
-
Keep it fun. This challenge is all about enjoying the hobby, getting neglected minis painted, and experimenting without stress.
-
Stick to the palette. Each week includes five paints. You can only use those specific paints or close matches. Mixing and thinning is totally fair game!
This week’s palette opens up some really nice blending potential. Thunderhawk Blue and Abaddon Black in particular are perfect for creating smooth, moody gradients—and I can already see some dramatic effects coming together.
I felt a strong pull towards a specific model in my Ash Wastes Nomands force for Necromunda for this palette.
To kick things off, I started with a full base coat of Abaddon Black, which gave the model a rich, dark foundation to build on. It’s a great way to add depth right from the start.
Next up was a layer of Thunderhawk Blue. This cool, bluish-grey really stood out to me—it instantly gave the model a moody tone that I knew would make the orange and silver pop later on.
For a bit of contrast and texture, I reached for the closest match I had to Skarsnik Green—Warboss Green from Citadel. I used it on the cloth straps, leathers, pants, and one glove. It added just the right amount of color variation to break things up.
Then came the real pop: Troll Slayer Orange. This paint has been a favorite of mine lately—bright, bold, and always easy to read on the tabletop. I used it for things like threads, wires, eyes, and earpieces. Just a little goes a long way!
To finish it off, I added subtle highlights using Stormhost Silver. It blended beautifully over the black and blue tones, especially on metallic elements like the weapon, the “bones” at the top, and the rocky base.
All in all, I’m really happy with how this little guy turned out. Can’t wait to dive into the next challenge!
